Innovation, Innovation, Innovation
Over 110,000 of the biggest and brightest minds will gather in Barcelona between February 26th and March 1st to celebrate and explore innovation in the mobile industry.
And of course there’s no lack of topics to discuss at this year’s MWC, from the end of roaming charges and net neutrality to the ever changing face of mobile advertising and the rise of partnerships between content subscription services and mobile operators.
Mobile World Congress 2018 kicks off on Monday the 26th of February at 9am with the unmissable keynote talk on Creating a Better Service Provider. Attendees will hear from industry heavyweights including Chairman and CEO of Telefónica, José María Álvarez-Pallete, and Chairman of China Mobile, Shang Bing.
The speakers will discuss a range of issues currently affecting the mobile sector, including the challenges and opportunities for mobile operators with 5G, AI, IoT, big data, video and VR. The first keynote of the week is guaranteed to set the tone and subject matter for the rest of the event so be sure to be fresh faced and eager come Monday morning.
A must see for the champions of content is the Value Creation and Investment in Content talk which takes place at 11am on Monday 26th February. Hear from a range of bigwigs, including Jason Juma-Ross, APAC Head of Tech & Telecom Strategy for Facebook, and Andrew Haworth, Managing Director of content and strategy for BT Sport.
The expert panel will discuss the alliances and partnerships emerging between mobile operators and content publishers. And how both can work together to deliver mutually beneficial results.
First time MWC goers should be sure to check out the Venue Tour given by a GSMA rep who will share all the insights, pro tips and what you should expect from the rest of the week. It kicks off at 11am on Monday.
Tuesday the 27th of February is all about IoT and Big Date. Entrepreneurs and startup fanatics should head to the The 10 Golden Steps For Mobile Startups To Go Global talk at 1pm, given by Pepe Agell, VP of strategy for Chartboost. Agell will give his insights into “how to modify internal processes, how to hire effectively and how to localize the product to tailor the message to local needs”.
On Wednesday the 28th, be sure to attend the talk on how mobile operators are fighting back after heavy revenue losses in the age of OTTs. Exploring the Rise of Operator-Led OTT Services conference will discuss how mobile operators can take charge by launching their own competitive OTT services.
As the world looks to China for new consumers, Bo Ji, chef rep and assistant dean of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, discusses the opportunities and pitfalls of the Chinese market in his talk: Unicorn Or Dragon-How To Tap Into Chinese Market For Growth.
The last day of MWC kicks off with what some critics often refer to as industry buzzword “IoT”, and how the mobile sector can change it into concrete solutions. In his talk, Turning IoT Ambition Into Business Reality, Bernd Gross, from Software AG, will discuss how “Telecommunications operators have an extremely valuable position in the IoT ecosystem”.
An essential for mobile operators keen to increase revenue via gaming, Gamelab Mobile is an all day event from Thursday at 9.30am to 3.30pm. The event is free to attendees and promise to explore the “latest trends and opportunities in the convergence of entertainment, technology and media”.
